Known for his longtime collaboration with First Man director, Damien Chazelle, multi award-winning composer Justin Hurwitz has catapulted to the top with his Oscar-winning score for La La Land, his jazz score for Whiplash and finally First Man - his most thought-provoking score yet, which he also conducted.
Spending time with Justin in his home studio, he begins by sharing his scoring process for his latest project, First Man. For this film, all of post-production lived under one roof, allowing Justin to collaborate closely with sound designer Ai-Ling Lee to create the perfect synergy between the sound design and the music.
Justin delves into the various stages and challenges faced when creating an Academy Award-winning score — from writing the main themes, to his close collaboration with director Damien Chazelle; from working with jazz and orchestral musicians, to the dub stage, and final delivery. He also explores the challenge of making his screen song performances and the score feel like one voice — a challenge faced on both Whiplash and La La Land.
